Day 19 – 132.3 Miles — Rawlins to Atlantic City, WY

Up at 2:15 AM and out the road at 3:25 AM.

5:08 AM I am 17.7 miles in just met ninja who is hiking the continental divide trail from Mexico up to Canada and she’s just starting across to great basin. She has to  hitchhike a ride 30 miles into Lander to get resupplied and then hitchhike back 30 miles to the trail.

The wind was gusting pretty hard this morning when I took off at 3:30 countnied blowing until about five and then it calm down.  it’s 5:28 now and everything is calm and still but the weather is predicting it’s gonna pick back up later today so I’m trying to crank out as many miles as I can as hard as I can and anticipation that it might be a head wind.

Just saw The first two wild mustangs so far I’ve seen at least 20 antelope. There’s herds of wild mustang that roam free out here in the basin sciatica.

7:06 AM I’m 40.8 miles west in. It’s been a nice day so far stopping to have the other half of that turkey sub sandwich. Had half this morning before I left I saved half for breakfast on the way, and this is that breakfast. I’ve been cranking this morning trying to get as many miles behind me as I can before the wind kicks up today been doing pretty good.

I’m carrying about 7 L of liquid with me this morning and I can tell it by the weight of the bike. The adventure cycling Association maps that I bought for this trip recommends caring 3 to 4 gallons across the section. I don’t see how anyone carries 3 gallons of water on a bicycle, the seven or so liters I have put a big drag on me. But, Feeling great And the bike will get lighter as I consume the water and Gatorade.

9:36 AM and 60.1 miles, lots of nice cloud cover, have a strong wind coming out of the south west I am primarily headed north west, So it’s  not a tail wind. it’s coming across the side and helping to keep me cool with a cool breeze and I get a little bit of a sail effective out of it.

10:43 AM I’m at 70.9 miles in I’ve been cranking feeling good like I’m getting my legs under me now. Stop for a minute I have some gummy bears and water and keep on cranking and I am over halfway there.

12:05 I’m at 80 miles in the wind has shifted now coming out of west—has slowed me down a lot. Glad I got some good miles in early.

4:02 pm at 100.3 miles. The wind is Relentless it’s gusting right in my face coming out of the east making the miles hard.

8:15 PM. 132.3 miles and finally made it to Atlantic City. Too tired to document anything for the past few hours I’m checking into a cabin here and just taking a shower and going to bed. Without the wind I could’ve been here at four or 5 o’clock at the latest today and feeling good. But the wind has just beat me down. I can’t really put into words how hard it was pedaling west into this headwind all afternoon. I’m tired. Mental note, after this ride is done I will never ride a bicycle in the state of Wyoming again.
