Day 29 – 81.2 Miles — Lincoln to Condon, MT

Up at 5:15 this morning. Got a sore back from all the climbing yesterday. Moving a bit slow trying to do some stretching getting ready to go this morning. As usual, supposed to be a nice day till about two or 3 o’clock and the thunderstorms start moving in. Try to make it to Seeley Lake today.

On the road at 6:26 AM it’s a cool foggy morning. And I lost my mirror again somewhere yesterday. Don’t like that. I always like to be able to see what’s behind me even if I’m on remote dirt roads, so gonna have to deal with it for the next two or three days.

26.2 miles in and arrived in Ovando. Having breakfast at the Stray Bullet. Biscuits and gravy, eggs, oatmeal, coffee, and orange juice. Still an overcast cool morning. 8:40 am and fog still hanging around.

10:07 AM finished breakfast here in Avanda. Stayed here way too long time to get on the road, but at least I have a full stomach and the fog has finally burned off.

11 AM stop at a bridge over a stream had some unsweet tea stretching my legs a little. 19 miles to Sealy lake and just a moderate climb between here and there. Feeling good—nice day, suns out getting warm.

Got to Seeley Lake about 1:30 PM. Stopped at a gas station got some food and drink, this was my original destination for today but got here a lot earlier than I thought I would, so I spent some time doing some research on where I could stay if I kept going. Ended up spending way too much time here. So I’m taking off about 2:30pm heading north. Now I’m looking at Condon as maybe a stopping place there’s a Campground there. That should put me at a reasonable two days to the border of Canada. So I picked up some extra food to put in my bags for tonight and looks like I’ll be camping tonight somewhere in Condon.

Got to Condon around 4:40pm. Would like to go another 20 or so miles but nowhere to stay if I did, so camping here by a grocery store for the night. Got my tent up and a huge hail storm moved in. A couple from Holland came in to camp as well. They’re going south and taking until mid Sep to complete doing around 30 miles a day.

Contacted the whitefish bike retreat in whitefish, MT to arrange a place to stay tomorrow night….it’s about 80 miles from here. Then I’ll finish my ride to the border on Monday—about 60 miles. They will pick me up and take me back to the retreat where I’ll box up my bike and arrange for bike flights to pick it up and ship it gone. I’ll stay there again Monday night and they’ll take me to the airport in Kalispel on Tuesday for my flight home. Looks like it’ll be an 18 or so hour flight with a couple connections to get me back home on Wednesday.
